Volume 1: Admission Asessment covers labour & psychosocial assessment (compassionate communication, relationships, reassurance, physical exam, signs of abuse, responding to fears, and assessing support needs) and cultural assessment & care planning (beliefs, privacy and exposure, expressions of pain, language barriers, evaluating expectations of labour and birth, birth plans, special needs or disabilities, working with a doula).


Volume 2: First Stage Labor Support covers labour pain (including factors affecting how a woman responds to pain in labour), the nurse’s role (being present, anxiety reduction, creating a supportive environment, and providing comfort measures), maternal positions & movements (side-lying, upward, forward leaning, birth ball, foetal monitoring), and non-pharmacologic techniques (massage, breathing, attention focusing and distraction, and more).


Volume 3: Second Stage Labor Support covers evidence-based care (pushing guidelines, fetal heart rate), positions (upright, hands and knees, side-lying, semi-Fowlers), providing comfort (comfort measures, emotions, communication, support people), and birth assistance & family support (reactions, skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding support).
